Garden & Food Plot Tilling

Whether you're putting in a backyard vegetable garden or prepping a food plot for hunting season, good ground preparation is where it all starts. We till it right the first time so you're not fighting your soil all season long.

Who we till for

Tilling requests come from two very different directions, and we're set up to handle both well.

Home Gardens

Backyard & residential gardens

New plot creation, annual spring re-tilling, bed preparation, and fall soil conditioning. Sized for everything from a 20x20 backyard patch to a large market-style garden.

Food Plots

Hunting & wildlife plots

Seedbed preparation for clover, brassicas, corn, and other wildlife plantings. We work with existing field conditions to give your seed the best possible start.

"Good tilling isn't just about breaking ground — it's about giving roots somewhere to go."

How the process works

We use a 49-inch 3-point rototiller on the John Deere 1025R, sized well for residential plots and small field sections. Here's what a typical tilling job looks like:

1
Talk through what you're planting. Depth, pass count, and approach all depend on what's going in the ground. A new plot broken from sod needs different treatment than an established garden getting its annual refresh.
2
Check for obstacles. We walk the area before we start — looking for rocks, buried debris, irrigation lines, tree roots, or anything else that could cause problems. Better to find it on foot than with the tiller.
3
Till to the right depth. Shallow passes for seedbed refinement, deeper passes for new plot creation or breaking compaction.
4
Leave it ready to plant. The goal is a consistent, workable seedbed — not just turned dirt. We make additional passes as needed until the surface is right.

When to book

Tilling is highly seasonal. Booking ahead — especially for spring — is the best way to make sure you're not waiting while your planting window closes.

Spring — March through May

Peak season for residential gardens. Demand is highest in April and early May. Book early if you have a specific planting date in mind.

Summer — Food plot prep

Summer plantings for warm-season food plot species. Timing depends on your target species — reach out and we'll talk through your plan.

Fall — September through October

Fall food plot prep for cool-season plantings. Also ideal for chopping up old vegetation and conditioning garden soil before winter and getting a head start on next spring.

Year-round availability

Outside of frozen ground conditions, we're available for tilling jobs year-round. Contact us and we'll let you know current availability.

Why Waymire Farms

We garden ourselves

Waymire Farms runs its own market garden. We understand soil preparation from the grower's perspective, not just the equipment operator's.

Right-sized for residential jobs

Our subcompact tractor and 3-point tiller are well matched to backyard gardens and small plots — precise, maneuverable, and easy on the surrounding lawn. We can also fit through most gates.

Honest about what we can do

Large-scale field work beyond our equipment's range gets a straight answer, not an oversold quote. We'll tell you what we can handle and what you might need elsewhere.

Local to central Indiana

Based in Madison County, serving Madison, Hamilton, and Delaware counties. Fast response times and no long-haul travel fees built into your quote.

Is tilling the right first step for your plot?

Tilling works best when the soil has no significant rocks or debris, the plot isn't heavily compacted hardpan, and you have a clear planting plan in mind. If you're breaking entirely new ground from established sod or pasture, we may recommend a bush hogging pass first to knock down existing vegetation before tilling. Not sure? Reach out and describe your situation — we're happy to talk it through before you book.
